Fings Ain’t Wot they Used ter be…


The words of this song are over half a decade old, but if you give them a little leeway, you can recognise many of our 2025 issues with those of 1975. The pace of change, traffic, parking, and the cost of living, as well as the failing ethics of the young.

Back then, it was normal for the older generation to refer to “The Good Old Days.” According to their account, life in the first half of the 20th century was akin to Nirvana, the Camelot of Australia. But then consider the painful transitions of women’s emancipation, World War I, followed so quickly by “The Great Depression, and World War II. A few years later, the World held its breath while the USA routed the Bay of Pigs, and in the UK, the Falklands War was soon another issue.

A few days ago, I was having coffee with a group of friends who were outdistancing each other on all the ills of the present retail world. Staff were illiterate, rude, slack, discourteous, yada, yada, yada. And yes, I had my own grievance to share.
