What a Wonder Full World

On the 13th September, the world was in awe as news began to circulate that after five failed attempts, the Soviet Union had landed a spacecraft on the surface of the moon. We were even more in awe, almost ten years later, when the United States Apollo 11 mission went literally one step further and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took that magic “small step for man and giant step for mankind.”

The next few years saw another 10 moon walkers before the exploration came to an end on 14th December 1972. By then, it was beginning to be a BIG yawn.

Fast-Forward 50 plus years more, and I woke to hear the radio presenter telling us all of the “amazing achievement of The Wiggles.” We were celebrating thirty years of this group entertaining children. Wow. Apparently, this was so much more exciting than Jasmine Harrison, who at age 21 had just rowed solo for 70 days across the 4,800 kilometres of the Atlantic Ocean. And needless to say other news, such as the landing of NASA’s Perseverance rocket, on the infamous Red Planet, Mars, only got a late-night mention.

There are so many recent scientific or technological advances that could well be associated with superlatives such as “awesome, incredible, fantastic or unbelievable – such as the examples below. But, I guess, none of them measure up to Taylor Swift’s new album, featuring the young woman’s digitally enhanced voice singing her own songs. Double Wow!
